Assessment

  1. Class project (seminars 1-5):

We are working on the sports and recreation industry.
The purpose of our project is to analyse the market of various countries (and the evolution over the last 20 years): the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, China, European countries (one or several) in order to compare them.
The analysis will focus on determining the size of the market, its major trends (e.g.: what are the most important sports? How much is invested in sports facilities? What are the big names, key players in that market? What about the government/state involvement? etc)
Once we have gathered the quantitative (only) data requested, we will look into the sports performance of the nations (i.e.: their world (+ Olympic Games) ranking) and try and draw conclusions if feasible.
The goal is to query the potential inter-relationship between national leisure/recreational sports pratice and competitivenessat international level; for inspiration we may read the paper by A Szabo in 2013 (see Appendix 1 of your booklet).
You are required to present your “national” findings to the class; we will log in your findings (30% of your mark) in a shared summarizing xls spreadsheet and attempt to draw broader, global conclusions at the end.

  2. Group/ Survey project: (seminars 6-8)

    In this project:

    – you are required to do some survey sampling, your fellow students* being the sample you will question and gather data from (we are doing some convenience sampling). Since you are the sample, it means the issue you will work on concerns you as a target market i.e. your research work will focus on:
    – a young population (under 25? 30?) (please define your age range)
    – both male and female
    – student population? *
    – any other criteria defining your sample? *

    * Your fellow students are the people in your class, as a priority. If you want to open up your sample profile to a larger population (e.g.: young workers, and not sole students), then please do it! Just keep the same age range though.

    – your research question must concern your sample, who represents your target population.

    – you must build a questionnaire that will enable you to answer your research question. Aim at 10 questions, including closed as well open-ended questions.

    – please question a few people (who are not part of your group). Then question your remaining peers via Wooclap (please give me access to your Wooclap questionnaire)

    – you will obviously quickly obtain results via Wooclap. Please use these results to build a report and analyse your findings, then you will explain these results in class (40% of your mark)
  3. Grammar test: 30% of your mark
