| 1 | Phone calls & Sports news | Understanding the basic expressions when making a phone call Practising! | Course introduction : The objective of this course is to help you and make you feel better practising your English. In real and practical situations! So, this semester, we will focus on making phone calls and expressing our interests (in sports). Next semester, we will do the same, via emails. 1. Phone calls: when it can all go pear-shaped! Yes, the accent DOES matter. Working on it is a long-term process… but it is never too late to start and give it a go. We’ll come back to that later on, on and off, as we go along! 2. Expressions: please browse your booklet p. 3 & 4 3. Listen to a real conversation 4. Train in groups of 3 (p.5) 5. | 2 | Technical Phone calls | Practise your phone skills and acquire sport specific technical vocab | 1. Match comment! Your feedback: is it an easy exercise? Probably not in English, because you lack technical vocabulary. Time to strengthen your knowledge then! 2. Let’s have a look at : A/ How to parameter google to get appropriate terms B/ Browse the right sites, to learn the right terms: e.g.: football -> let’s have a look at this Irish site e.g.: swimming -> let’s have a look at this British site Let’s read together -> it’ll be a good attempt at working on your pronunciation! 3. Please go through your text and write down the key technical terms you have just come across. Check your knowledge of the human body too! 4. Train in groups of 3 (p.8) For next session: please revise the new vocab and work on your script |
| 3 | Technical phone calls | Practise your phone skills presenting (recommending or advising against) an athlete | 1. How should we present an athlete we want to either recommend, or advise against? 2. Let’s watch a particular scene from Hustle: the case of HAAS, from 5.46 – 7.50 (you may watch the film on Dailymotion) More on 3. How about getting inspired by Hustle and argue about the case of your athlete over the phone? Please do use some the technical terms we worked with in the previous session. Train in groups of 3 (p.12) – Beware this is the script for your assessment and that you will have to record your video soon as you need to hand it in on 24/10/2025!
