AI &amp; Computer Vision in Sports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial intelligence is increasingly used for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tactical analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automated highlights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Player tracking from video<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies analyze entire matches using machine vision to detect patterns that humans miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>-> <\/strong>These few examples show that the biggest transformations came from <strong>data, technology, and digital media<\/strong>\u2014<strong>changing how athletes train, how games are officiated, and how fans experience sports.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>In other words, the scope of innovation in sports remains within sports boundaries<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">B. Sports: a gold mine for innovation?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports data have already been used to question and research topics relating to various strategic and psychological aspects of decision making; in 2019, L Balafoutas, S M Chowdhury and H Plessner gathered and analysed 16 research articles that use data from various sports to study a diverse set of topics in economics, psychology, and management. As mentioned in the introduction of their own article, &#8220;The common thread of these articles is<strong> human behavior<\/strong> and<strong> economic decision making by individuals and teams<\/strong>, and the specific topics covered in this special issue include, among others: strategic behavior by teams and individuals in competitive situations, effort provision in teams, task scheduling, psychological momentum effects, judgement and decision biases, life satisfaction, and (strategic) display of emotions.&#8221; In Section 3 of this editorial, we summarize each study and its contribution to our understanding of decision making&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S016748701930114X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Applications of sports data to study decision-making, in Journal of Economic Psychology, vol 75, part B<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars still research on sports, trying to figure out whether sports can be used for more general, broader perspectives than those limited to its own field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that context, DRUID (<a href=\"https:\/\/druid.dk\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/druid.dk\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a Danish hub for research on innovation<\/a>) organised a conference in Nice in June 2024, and debated <em><strong>on using sports data for decision-making<\/strong><\/em>, specifically questioning whether<em><strong> research to inform strategy and innovation decisions has<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> significantly overstated<\/span> the value of sports as a context.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sports has naturally imposed itself as a field (or a playground?) for research on human behaviour, tactical decision making etc, as mentioned earlier; the very fact that some scholars- who exclusively work on innovation-related topics &#8211; ask whether sports data is<em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> OVERLY<\/span><\/strong><\/em> used in research means that sports is definitely a key player and a key field in research already (some of the scholars who took part in the DRUID debate have since issued a paper on this, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13662716.2025.2523529#abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sports as a context in strategy and innovation research: promises, challenges and broader implications, by A Conti et al  ,in the journal of Industry and Innovation, Aug. 2025<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It thus represents a gold mine for research and innovation, and in that  respect, <strong><em>sports furthers innovation, which goes far beyond its boundaries<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>C.
