Group discussion:

Out of all these examples, what do you think is the most impactful and long lasting, and why?

Now let’s reverse it: how is sport influenced by cultures?

Sport and culture influence each other in many ways. Culture shapes how sports are played, valued, organized, and understood, while sports often reflect and reinforce cultural beliefs and identities. Here are the main ways culture influences sport:

1. Values and Beliefs

Cultural values determine what sports are popular and how they are played.

2. Traditions and History

Many sports grow out of cultural traditions.

3. Social Identity and National Pride

Sports often express cultural and national identity.

4. Gender Roles

Cultural attitudes toward gender strongly influence sport.

5. Religion and Morality

Religion can influence sports schedules, clothing, and behavior.

6. Media and Commercial Influence

Culture shapes how sports are presented and consumed.

7. Globalization

As cultures interact, sports spread and change.

In summary: sport is a cultural product. It reflects a society’s values, traditions, identities, and social structures, while also influencing culture by shaping behavior, role models, and shared experiences.

Please form groups of 3/4 people, and try to foresee what emerging sports we may see in the near future and analyse their cultural impact. 2 students will present one/some of these sports and related analysis next week.
